Equipment Overview

Laser cutting is used within the FJSoA for model making, prototyping, or individual research.  The designShop is equipped with 5 Universal Laser Systems CO² laser cutters.  This equipment is used for cutting any 2 dimensional shape out of a variety of materials under 1/4″ thick or etching patterns on the surface of those materials.

Student-User Responsibilities

  • Complete Orientation
  • Sign up at designreserve.uark.edu 
  • Check drawings – Should errors be found students will be required to fix them before their job is run, this may result in the technician postponing the job
  • Clean up during and after job cuts- technicians will assist and ensure the job runs smoothly —they are not there to redraw your files.

VL-200 YELLOW and RED

  • 25 Watt laser
  • Maximum Depth of material = 1/8”
  • Maximum Size of material = 12H x 16W inches
  • Engraves wood, plastic, or paper (Can engrave on material thicker than 1/8″.  Ask staff for assistance)
  • Engraves ceramic, glass, and metal with special coating
  • Cuts wood, plastic, or paper
  • Will CUT vectors and ETCH raster images
  • Rotary available
